Merry Christmas

I wanted to take the time to wish you all a Merry Christmas. I am a Christian and I believe in saying, "Merry Christmas."

This time of year it's hard to know what to say to people. Some people become offended by saying, "Merry Christmas." They want us to say, "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" or some other form of greeting that doesn't reflect our personal beliefs. My question to you is, how do you handle this? I'd be curious to hear your responses on what you believe should be said this time of year.

Here in Olympia we've been having an interesting time at our capital building. Among the traditional Christmas decorations an atheist has placed a sign stating his/her belief that there is no God, no Angels, no Hell, etc. It has created a pretty big uprising among the Christian community. There were even protests held at the capital against the sign.

My belief is that we live in America and that means we have freedom of speech. My husband fights daily for this freedom. While don't agree with the sign I don't feel it is my place to protest it. I am not here to judge what another person believes. God will be the judge, not me.

History repeats itself and there will forever be non-believers in this world. Acts 14: 2 says, "But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers." There will forever be people of different faiths and different beliefs trying to turn our minds against God. It is how we react to these situations that shows the kind of belief that we have. Acts 19:9 says, "But some of them became obstinate, they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them, He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus." Paul set an example in his actions.

Romans 14:22 says, "So that whatever you believe about these things keep to yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves."

What do you believe?

My prayer: Dear Lord, I praise you. Thank you for giving us free will to come to know and love you by our own choice. We are able to know you in such an intimate and personal way. I pray for those who have found you and love you and ask that you continue to bless their lives. I also pray for those who have not come to find you and do not know your love that they may be led to you and saved. I know you are leading them, help them to open their eyes and see the wonderful things you are doing in their lives. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Opening Blog

I’m going to begin my blog by discussing what my goals for it will be. If you’ve read my profile and my dashboard you can see that I can sum myself up by saying I am a Christian, mother, and military wife. These three areas of my life have posed many questions that I’ve had to answer. Some I’ve had to discover on my own, some I’ve had the help of my family and friends and others I’ve just had to rely on other people to do their jobs. In this blog I want to present some of the experiences that have come and gone in my life. I want to bring to the table some issues facing all of us in today’s world. I want to look at various topics through faith and experience. I want these pieces of my personal journey to be expressed and maybe help or influence others to think about the various topics themselves. Ideally, I would like to update the blog a few times a week to open the topics to discussion. Depending on the length or response may determine how often the site is updated. I invite you to c...

Faith

I have faith. What does it mean when a person says, “I have faith?” Part of my goals for this blog is to discuss faith playing a part in dealing with various issues. I feel that we should start by talking about faith itself. At one of my very first Bible study sessions a friend of mine said that she doesn’t like it when people say, “I have faith” because they aren’t expressing where their faith lies. Faith is defined as “…in general the persuasion of the mind that a certain statement is true. Its primary idea is trust. A thing is true, and therefore worthy of trust. It admits of many degrees up to full assurance of faith, in accordance with the evidence on which it rests." (Easton) I recently was reading an article in a magazine that consisted of “inspirational” quotes from famous historical figures. Out of the seven included quotes only one of them mentioned anything about faith. However, that one quote didn’t state what your faith should be in: “Take the first step in faith. You...

Finding Gratitude

For this post I decided to take a topic idea from the comments that have been posted on this blog. Thank you, Kari, for the idea of discussing finding gratitude. When I first started researching the idea I wasn’t sure what I would find. Being thankful and having gratitude is one thing but finding it in our lives seems to be much more complicated. In general what I learned from various articles is that to find gratitude you must fist practice giving it. People who regularly practice giving gratitude seem to find much more fulfillment in their lives. The foundation of many of the worlds religions revolve around gratitude. The scriptures teach it by telling us to be thankful for what we’ve been given. ( http://www.religionlink.org/ ) One article I read entitled “Gratitude Leads to Happiness” states: “A grateful people will feel an obligation toward others—toward God (for believers) the source of all we have, and toward those les fortunate than we—toward those with less, especially those i...
